Connector Temperature: The Early Warning Sign

During on-site audits, the first thing we photograph is not the miner itself but the connectors where PSU cables meet the unit. Elevated pin temperature is the most reliable predictor of imminent failure we have found across hundreds of installations.

Normal vs. Concerning

At sustained mining load, connector housings should read within 5°C of ambient air temperature near the cable entry. Readings above 45°C at the pin interface — measured with a thermal camera or quality infrared thermometer — indicate resistance building in the connection.

Common Causes

Loose seating. Factory cables sometimes arrive with pins not fully clicked into the miner socket. A 0.5°C daily increase over two weeks often traces to a connector that was never fully seated.

Mixed cable batches. Using a PSU cable from one manufacturer with a PSU from another can change pin tension. The connection looks seated but carries higher resistance.

Oxidation in humid environments. Busan coastal humidity accelerates contact oxidation on copper pins. We see this more in ground-floor installations without dehumidification.

What To Do

If your connector reads above 45°C, shut down that unit and reseat all connections. Replace any cable showing discoloration at the pin crimp. Do not continue operating while waiting for a consultation — the cost of a cable is trivial compared to a burned ASIC board.
